Effective Widths of Unstiffened Elements with Stress Gradient

چکیده
Current American design provisions treat unstiffened elements under stress gradients as if they were uniformly compressed for effective width calculations. Australian, British, and European design provisions allow accurate calculation of the elastic buckling coefficient, however, the same effective width equation for compressed elements is used for elements with stress gradients. In all cases, the design provisions produce conservative bending capacities for sections containing unstiffened elements under stress gradients. This paper presents a design method for calculating the effective width of these elements, based on plate test results of unstiffened elements under strain gradients varying from pure compression to pure bending. It is shown that both elastic and plastic effective widths may be derived from the test results, and effective width methods based on both principles may be used for design. Stress Gradient Effect on the Buckling of Thin Plates
This paper presents an analytical method to calculate the buckling stress of a rectangular thin plate under nonuniform applied axial stresses. Two cases are considered, buckling of a plate simply supported on all four sides and buckling of a plate simply supported on three sides with one unloaded edge free and the opposite unloaded edge rotationally restrained. These two cases illustrate the in...

In line with the current research on the ultimate strength assessment of ship hull girders, careful understanding of the collapse behaviour of unstiffened plate elements within the ship hull girders is an important and necessary task. In this paper, the collapse behaviour of unstiffened plates under longitudinal and transverse thrust is studied by elastoplastic large deflection FEM and the char...
متن کاملFree Vibration Analysis of Microtubules as Orthotropic Elastic Shells Using Stress and Strain Gradient Elasticity Theory
In this paper, vibration of the protein microtubule, one of the most important intracellular elements serving as one of the common components among nanotechnology, biotechnology and mechanics, is investigated using stress and strain gradient elasticity theory and orthotropic elastic shells model. Microtubules in the cell are influenced by internal and external stimulation and play a part in con...

A number of experiments have been carried out in the current paper to investigate the effect of adding a longitudinal impermeable blade beneath the offshore pipelines on decreasing the scour around them. The main aim of this study was to reduce the hydraulics gradient beneath the pipe so that its magnitude recedes from the critical hydraulics gradient and therefore delays the onset of scour phe...
متن کاملParametric Study of SCFs in Unstiffened Gap Tubular KT-joints of Offshore Structures under OPB Moment Loading
In this paper, results extracted from a set of stress analyses performed on 46 FE models for unstiffened gap tubular KT-joints are presented and discussed. The main objective of the FE analyses, validated against experimental data, was to run a parametric investigation on the effects of geometrical characteristics of the joint on the values of the stress concentration factors (SCFs). The SCF is...
